Tarpon Charters

Catch Tarpon in Tampa Bay

Just imagine tying some heavy fishing line to the rear bumper of a race car while you’re holding a rod and reel at the opposite end. Then it takes off going 0 to 30 in just a few seconds while all you can do is hold on for dear life. That’s exactly what it feels like hooking a Tarpon before it leaps from the water in an acrobatic display of high jumps and tail walking across the water.

Tampa Bay has one of the best Tarpon fisheries in Florida with the season starting as early as March running to November. Of course the prime time to charter fish for Tarpon in Tampa Bay is during the summer. This is when Tarpon are here in huge numbers and are available to catch day or night depending on the tides and moon phases. If you have ever wanted to test your strength and endurance come out and go toe to toe with a Tarpon on a charter with us.

We have so many different ways to fish for Tarpon here in Tampa Bay which rival that of other known destinations. The early summer fishing along our Gulf Beaches can be mind blowing as huge pods of migrating Tarpon work up and down the coast as they leave and return from spawning. During mid to late summer as more and more Tarpon return after the spawn, they begin to fill into Tampa Bay by the hundreds. They will scatter out to all over the bay where they spend the remainder of the summer months feeding and relaxing.

While hooking and fighting a large Tarpon that may weight a hundred lbs or better is the ultimate goal for most people, we have a huge population of juvenile Tarpon in the 15 to 30 lb range. During the mid to late summer months is when we target these smaller but scrappy fish on much lighter tackle. Every summer we look forward to the arrival of these juvenile Tarpon which our clients catch with us on a regular basis. Doing battle with a little Tarpon may take less time but it’s just as thrilling as a big fish.

During the months of May, June and July we have what’s called “Hill Tides” which fall on and around the new and full moon phases. This is when we will have extremely high tides during the day, and then a fast moving outgoing tide flushes out all kinds of food sources that the Tarpon find irresistible. One of the top baits of choice we use on the hill tides are silver dollar size pass crabs which are pushed out of the passes by the thousands. This is an amazing sight to see as hundreds of Tarpon lie just below the surface sucking down the crabs as they ride the tide.
